Ongoing supportive care and attention of significant, committed adults throughout the young person's educational path (school – family – community) |
Research on the school dropout situation consistently emphasizes the issue of support for young students, along their educational path but also in other areas of life. The research emphasizes one of the characteristic traits of dropouts – that they receive, or at least perceive that they receive, little support or encouragement from the adults around them at home, at school and in their community. A recent study reported that, in the majority of dropout cases studied, it was only when the risk of failure or dropout was imminent did parents begin to take an interest in the young person's school life and plans. | |
This support must first come from the family through parenting practices that promote the child's development, ongoing support for the child's school life and supervision that helps create a balance between school work, recreational activities and other activities or obligations that the child may have. This is also achieved by establishing an open and productive dialogue between the family and the school.
This support continues in school through early screening for learning problems, allowing for the quick implementation of appropriate support mechanisms for various situations that are adapted to a student's specific needs. This is achieved through close monitoring of the student's evolution and regular adjustments to the types of support, attention, stimulation and encouragement provided by the school. Thanks to the dialogue established between the school and the family, the specific efforts made by the school can be continued and emphasized at home.
Finally, support to young people must also be provided, in as consistent a way as possible with actions undertaken by the school and at home, in other areas of the child's life: at work, in recreational activities, in youth organizations (sports clubs, associations, youth centres, etc.), in the professional, social and health services provided to the young people and in the municipalities where they live.
