Community

What role do communities play in educational success?

“Dropping out of school is a complex problem with various causes. Solutions must thus be varied and complementary, and the stakeholders, many. A school cannot act alone to address this issue; it must be supported by a number of partners from a variety of sectors. Promoting educational perseverance is a community responsibility, and leaders from every milieu should be involved.”  (Translation)

Excerpt from the speech by Jacques Hémond, Chair of the Table des MRC de l'Estrie, Prefect of the Des Sources MRC, and Mayor of the town of Danville at the Elected Officials Session with Estrie school board chairs organized by the PRÉE Project in conjunction with CRÉ de l'Estrie and MAMROT, October 2008.

Why should Estrie communities become involved in educational perseverance and success?

Promoting school perseverance within the community

One of the Projet PRÉE priorities over the past few years has been to meet the needs and expectations of MRCs in terms of educational success. In January 2008, a working committee was created that was composed of municipal elected officials and people concerned with educational success. The committee's mandate was to take into consideration not only the needs and expectations of elected officials, but also the potential contributions that would support regional mobilization. With this in mind, a variety of tools were designed with the following objectives:

• Enhance knowledge in a variety of milieus regarding the dropout situation in Estrie and the reasons to get involved;
• Propose a mobilization process for communities in terms of student retention and educational success;
• Guide elected officials and community leaders in terms of actions that will have an impact on qualification and graduation rates in their territory;
• Promote the development of a community in terms of the human, social, cultural and economic aspects.

Partners for Educational Success Estrie also held two work sessions with elected officials in the region to discuss the possible types of support to educational success in various Estrie communities. These two evening sessions took place on October 1, 2008 and April 16, 2009.
